Summer project ideas - 2017 (Audio)

How's your summer going? As some of you know I had some surgery last month and am in the process of recuperation. It's been interesting to downshift things for what will be a couple of months. The timing was perfect for me as summer usually is a quieter time where I get to work on more creative projects. This summer the one item I'm continuing to move along is the launch of my new book - Effective Virtual Conversations - which will be released in about 3 weeks! I'm excited and also appreciative that virtual work and planning allows business to continue rolling along.

One of the most popular summer posts I have had in recent years has been an  annual summer project audio which I've recorded.

I've just done a short 8 minute audio which includes half a dozen ideas you might want to consider putting some attention around this summer. I hope that you will enjoy it! You'll find the audio at the bottom of our resources page over at From12many.com. If you didn't catch my spring community call on Five Ways to  Take Your Programs Virtual, I hope you'll check that out as well. You can find the recordings here (scroll down to end of page)

Have a great week,
Jennifer

Building your group and team coaching toolkit

One of the main focus areas of this weekend's Group and Team Coaching Intensive is going to be the
focus on building your toolkit. Building confidence and skills in working with teams and groups. For any of you who have read my work, or joined me for a program, you know how passionate I am as a coach practitioner in this topic area of building our toolkit and innovating as we do it. Each client engagement - whether a team or a group - is different and usually requires a different blend of skills and approaches.

Here are some past posts on this topic of building your toolkit - I hope you'll check them out:

Group Coaching Exercises from 2010 - read it here

Why are exercises important for group programming from 2006 - read it here

Exercises - the backbone of any program from 2009 - read it here

Group Facilitation Tip - Debriefing Exercises  - read it here

You'll hear and see me talk more about exercises and tools in some of last year's Group Coaching Design Studio blabs which I hosted. Here's a 30 min video on Visual Cards- one of my favorite tools. View it here

Here's a really short 3 min video on 5 ways to use index cards - another essential item in your toolkit. View it here.

What are the tools you want to add to your toolbox in the coming months?

We'll be going through more than 2 dozen (24) coaching tools and approaches this weekend at the Group and Team Coaching Intensive (19 CCEs) here in Toronto. I hope that you will consider joining us for this rich weekend program - spots are still open for virtual and in person attendees. Grab your spot here.

Have a great rest of the week,
Jennifer

Summer Community Call - Five Areas you may want to revisit in your group and team rogram design work

Last week I hosted our summer community call. The focus was on five areas you might want to revisit and tweak within your own group and team programming. In the call I also share the evolution of some of my own programming over the last 12 years, such as the early days of the Your Balanced Life(TM) program in 2004 and how it has evolved into a program which is now licensed for other coaches to offer.

Thanks to those that joined live and who have listened in already. I host these calls quarterly with the intent of shining the light into different areas of our work and also bring people together for dialogue and learning.

I've posted the Call to our Resources page over at FromOneToMany.com - view it here (scroll down to the bottom) or view it on YouTube.

The call runs for 32 minutes. View it here:

Stay tuned for our fall community call which will happen in September!

What's your favorite pointer? Some attendees indicated they liked the piece around engagement, and also hearing about the evolution of some of my program work. Feel free to share your favorite below.

Enjoy
Jennifer

Audio - Ten Ways to use the Conversation Sparker Cards (TM)

Many of you have read, or heard me speak, about the power of visuals in a group or team coaching process. For years I have used the Visual Explorer deck from Center for Creative Leadership in my programs, and earlier this year I launched the Conversation Sparker Cards(TM), a 72 card photo and question deck.

The Conversation Sparker Cards have taken root with many practitioners across both coasts of North America, and as far away as Iceland and Africa.  Last week a number of coaches had fun with them at the ICF Mid-West Regional Conference during a table-top discussion I facilitated on group and team coaching.

Earlier this week I hosted a call on Ten Ways To Use the Conversation Sparker Cards which you can listen to online here. I thought you would be interested in listening in particularly if you are looking for a new photo deck to use with your groups, or if you want to get some new ideas "sparked" for use with your current photo deck. The recording is 27 minutes in length.

Enjoy! Again, you can link to the Conversation Sparker Cards recording here.

With best wishes,
Jennifer

Year End Reflection Questions and New Year Wishes

I hope that the end of 2013 has been wonderful for you and your loved ones. It's been an interesting
holiday season in the Toronto area, with significant impact from an ice storm just before Christmas to a widespread outbreak of flu and cold. For many families, ours included, it was an opportunity to really take the pace down, disconnect and focus on what's important.

This month I have enjoyed sharing regular year end reflection questions at the Effective Group Coaching Facebook page. I know that not everyone is on Facebook, so if you are not, here's a selection of some of my favorites. You can also read some of them in my December Ins and Outs newsletter (click here to access the December newsletter).

I hope that you will find time in the coming days reflect on the year end questions, and potentially use them with some of your own coaching clients:

Each year at this time, I carve out time to write out my business vision for the next year which also includes a summary vision for the next year. I post this at my desk to keep it in the forefront each and every day. What will support you in keeping your vision alive this year?

In my 10th annual year end group programs call a few weeks ago I took at look at some of the key priorities, and best practices, I see in our work with teams and groups for 2014. If you haven't had a chance to listen into that call (approx 50 min), I hope you will do so. You can listen in here. Enjoy!

I have really enjoyed connecting with so many of you this past year here at the blog, in person at your organization or at speaking engagements or via phone. I look forward to continuing to act as a resource for you in your work with groups and teams in 2014.

Have a terrific start to the new year and wishing you all the best for 2014,
Jennifer

Group Programs - What's Different Today, Trends and Future Possibilties

Group Programs - What's Different Today, Trends and Future Possibilities
By Jennifer Britton, MES, PCC, CPCC. All Rights Reserved. Copyright 2013.

I hosted my 10th Annual Year End Group Programs call yesterday, an annual tradition for me in terms of
taking a look at recent trends and looking to the horizon of what's ahead.

As I was preparing for the call, I reflected on what has changed in the realm of group programs and coaching over the past 9-10 years. Here were some of the things that came to mind:
- Ten  years ago we were talking about teleseminars and teleclasses as opening a whole new vista. Today, consider how webinars, Google Hangouts are continuing to create connection and new learning opportunities.
- The growth of mobile learning - being able to really learn just-in-time from so many places - by smartphone, tablet, web etc.
- The continued appetite for connection with others
- Ten years ago group and team coaching were undertaken by only a few, and many in the coaching profession felt that the coaching conversation can only ensue in the individual environment. Anything else was not coaching, but training or facilitation. Today team and group coaching are really recognized as sub-disciplines of our work.

I spoke yesterday about some of the things I see on the horizon, as well as current issues we want to continue keeping an eye on. Briefly they include:

1. A continued need for, and emphasis on, relationship building. What relationships have supported you throughout this year? What new relationships do you want to foster in the new year. Coaching is a highly individualized service. How are people getting to know you, and what you offer? What approaches have you found most effective in building relationships this year?

2. Synergy and blending in our approaches, in service to the clients we work with. Today's business and personal challenges and opportunities require a multi-disciplinary approach. Coaching is one part of any solution. how do we synergize with others, and blend our skills and approaches in the variety of contexts we engage in. Coaching philosophy and approaches are grounded in the client as being the "Expert". With this in mind, what does synergy and blend, look like, and mean, for our clients?

3. Measurement - A critical part of any coaching conversation is having the client, team or group, identify what success is going to look like for them. At the same time, as coaches we need to continue to keep an eye on measuring impact, and capturing client stories (in a way that maintains their confidentiality). One of the conference sessions I enjoyed the most this year, and found most validating, was Lisa Edward's presentation at the ICF Mid-West Regional Conference. She made me realize that I'm already doing many of the things that are seen as best practice.

4. Sustainability - Sustainability is also a key consideration for the work we do. I know that this is an often over-used word. My entire career, especially prior to coaching when I worked with the UN and on international development issues, entailed working with others to create sustainable futures. I have flagged sustainability as an issue to keep an eye on, on a number of levels. First, exploring what sustainability means for our clients and their results? Second, sustainability for the organizations we work with. How can we partner to build additional capacity in the organizations and entities our clients are part of? Finally, sustainability is also key for ourselves as a coaching business. What will enable you to build a sustainable business?

The Brundtland Report provided us with the following definition of sustainable development more than 25 years ago,
"Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

What does sustainability mean for the coaching profession as a whole?

Sustainable development has always been grounded in a systems approach. What is your impact on the web around you.

I hope that you enjoy listening to the entire 50 minute call. In addition to quickly talking about these four areas, I also go into some recent research which has come out from the ICF about what coaches are doing, as well as some key reminders for making your own group programming (whether is it group coaching, or workshops, or retreats,  most impactful. You can listen into the call here.

Each year the call is a way for me to say thank you for your support. I also want to thank you for joining me here at the blog - whterh this is your first post that you read, or your hundredth. As always, I look forward to your feedback and suggestions on what you'd like to see going forward.

Best wishes for a wonderful holiday season!

My Interview with Marielle Gauthier - the Power of Coaching

I was able to sit down virtually this spring with Marielle Gauthier, a coach in Saskatchewan, to speak about coaching. She interviewed me as part of a series of interviews with coaches of all different backgrounds. We had a very lively discussion.

In the interview we talked about:

  • the difference between coaching, consulting and training
  • how coaching is a different type of conversation
  • how coaching is an opportunity to pause and reflect
  • the coachee as the driver of the process
  • how coaching can support culture change and organizational change
  • how a coaching conversation can attain better results
  • the impact of coaching on individuals, teams and organizations
  • how coaching can help individuals and teams get more focus and results
  • return on investment as a result of the coaching process

You can listen to the interview here. It runs for about 30 minutes. I hope that you will enjoy it! You will also want to stay tuned for other interviews Marielle is doing.

With best wishes,

Sharpening Your Skills as a Group or Team Coach - Audio Link

Thanks to all of you who joined me on Friday for the Fall 2012 Group Coaching Community Call. The topic this fall was sharpening your skills as a group or team coach. You can access the recording online here, as well as download the slides from the presentation. Look for the October 26, 2012 call on Sharpening Your Skills as a Team or Group Coach.

During this 50 minute call I discussed the core coaching competencies and specific techniques for group and team coaching. The call also challenges you to consider where your strengths lay as a coach, and what areas you want to continue to sharpen or refine.

There were some good suggestions for future calls including: Co-Facilitation, and incorporating training into a group coaching approach. What areas would you like the future quarterly calls to cover?

I hope that you enjoy the presentation. You are invited to continue the dialogue over at our Effective Group Coaching Facebook page.
