10 Approaches to Zest Up Your next Group Coaching

The possibilities are endless in terms of what you can do with groups during a group coaching engagement. Recently in my monthly group coaching newsletter, I shared these 10 ideas of different approaches you can incorporate into your next group coaching. Consider which ones you might want to add in to your next group or team coaching process:

Visuals - From digital photos to incorporating a process like Draw Your Future, what's possible?

Using Annotation to create your roadmap of where you are going to go

Incorporating Somatic approaches (i.e. getting in touch with, and activating your bodies)

Meditation

Journaling

Bringing in a guest speaker or a guest coach for one of your sessions (Call me... I'd love to join you and maybe even do some tag-team coaching!)

Peer partners

Having the group or team find one thing that is common across all group members; (A tip from last month's article!)

Questions

Reflective Pause

Laser Coaching

And, of course, dialogue!

What's your favorite approach to working with groups or teams? What is going to jazz up your next program?

Enjoy your conversations

Expanding Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit - Creativity (11)

Depending on the types of clients you work with exploring creativity may be at the heart of your   This week we are going to explore the landscape of expanding your group and team coaching toolkit around CREATIVITY. This is a huge topic and today’s post is literally, the tip of the iceberg. Creativity is a topic of importance to most professionals today – those who have it as the main part of their work – authors, artists, course creators AS WELL AS other professionals who are being called upon to do things in sometimes a radically different way due to changes in resourcing, timelines and/or other factors (political, environmental etc).
process.

In today’s business context we’ve been talking a lot about VUCA for several years now, where things have become volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. Whether you are leading (or supporting) people who see each other every day or are supporting remote teams, creativity is a “go to” in times of disruption and change.

Let’s take a look at some of the different tools we might incorporate in our work as group and team coaches. In addition to several creativity tools which I mention on a regular basis such as “visual cards” or Mindmapping, helping people expand and explore different perspectives around topics is a central part of creativity. The focus may be slightly different in the landscape of coaching many.

When group coaching, it’s likely that the perspectives work will be on the individual. Questions like “What’s another way of looking at this?” or “What’s another perspective?| can help the individual expand their thinking. Inherently, in a group coaching process, hearing from others about their perspectives can also be a powerful way to expand thinking.

In a team coaching context it’s likely that the focus on perspectives may be a blend of individual and collective. In fact, in coaching for creativity we may be aiming to expand thinking, harnessing the varying perspectives across a team so they can explore the myriad of angles possible.

Many coaches have know the power of time urgency in their work as well. For many years, as I have coached using exercises such as the Sweetspot (something I share in From one to Many: Best Practices for Team and Group Coaching), I’ve helped people “short circuit some of their creative blockages” by giving short time windows. Whether it’s been 90 seconds to come up with an answer to a  question of “What do your clients want, need and prefer” OR giving people a two minute writing prompt, the use of time windows may also be another way to jiggle some new creative spins, and move people out of blocks.

A third one I wanted to mention is something I have incorporated in my own work since the spring of 2016 – offering shorter program cycles which I call Sprints and Hacks. For years I would work with program designers for a 4-6 hour program, providing them with lots of space for structured program design. A few years ago, inspired by the rapid iteration of Agile processes, I started shortening this and offering 45 – 60 minute design sprints. The results have been amazing! Several of the skeletal programs which were initially sketched out have come to fruition for several group coaching clients. How might a sprint or hack focus expedite your clients work?

Questions to consider - Coaching For Creativity:

What does coaching for creativity mean for you?

What does it mean to be creative?

What’s going to help you get unstuck?

What role can time play with unleashing creativity?

What’s another way of looking at things?

If you knew you would not fail, what would you do?

What else?

Expanding Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit - Results (4)

We’re moving into week 4 of the 52 weeks of building your team and group coaching toolkit. Following closely behind the topics of coaching for action and awareness, come this week, and next week’s focus of RESULTS and RELATIONSHIPS.

When coaching teams particularly, supporting them to identify the results they are aiming for is key. This goes hand in hand with Relationships.

This week, let’s take a look at RESULTS.

On the group level, it’s likely that within a coaching group each group member will be striving for a set of individual results. There may be a common set of results people are aiming for across the group – such as “Building my business” or “Becoming a better leader”. If there is too much divergence in the goals and results coaching groups are looking for, it is possible that there is not enough synergy and cohesion.

At the team level, results may be collective as well as individual. A significant amount of the coaching process may revolve around supporting the team to:

  • Clarify what results are – across the team, as it relates to other parts of the organization and/or with the overall organization;
  • Create alignment around how things are measured and reported on;
  • Understand everyone’s contribution;
  • Understand how one task/result impacts another

Coaching Tools you might include are:
1.       SWOT
2.       Strategic Issues Mapping
3.       Exploring the Values of the team and how these are translated to action, and therefore results
4.       Action Plans
5.       What success will look like….
6.       What else?
7.       Five Whys Coaching tool

I’ll expand on each one of these in this week’s Facebook Live – join me over at Effective Group Coaching this week for the call.

Best
Jennifer

Expanding Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit - Awareness (3)

In this week’s continuation of the Building Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit series, we’re going to explore awareness.

Awareness can be just as important as action in any coaching process. As I posed last week – is our action, the right action.

In exploring awareness with teams and groups, we usually drop “Below the waterline” into areas that are not always seen. Coaching for awareness can include areas such as:

  • ·         Belief Systems
  • ·         Values
  • ·         Perspectives
  • ·         Assumptions

When coaching a team it is these elements that get translated into behaviors. What is interesting is that many of these elements are not articulated or shared, which may lead to differences in how the behaviors are demonstrated.
For example, if I am driven by a value of speed, I may find quick ways to do things which get the results but may not be of the same quality as someone who has a value around quality. This can lead to differing results, which sometimes is in conflict with each other.

As we have seen in past posts, one of the greatest challenges for teams is finding alignment so that they are all pulling in the same direction.  When alignment around behaviors and results is not present, a team coach may want to “drop below the waterline” with the team in exploring beliefs, values, perspectives and assumptions. It is likely that one, or more of these, are at play.

At the group coaching level, when a coach is working with a group of new business owners for example, it can be useful to explore how these elements (beliefs, values, perspectives, assumptions) are shaping each individual in the group. Hearing from others may surface some new learning for other group members.

Coaching Areas we may find oursleves coaching around:
Beliefs (Enabling Beliefs, Limiting Beliefs, Inner Critics/Gremlins/Saboteurs)
Values
Vision
Assumptions
Perspectives

Questions to explore around awareness:
1.       In the big picture, what’s important?
2.       How are your values getting translated to action?
3.       What are the different perspectives you are holding around X topic? (i.e. growing your business).
4.       What assumptions are you making?
5.       What belief systems are shaping your actions?
6.       What else is important to note?

In my work as a mentor coach I have found that coaching around awareness can be an area that is rich and valuable. While it may not have the allure of coaching into speed and action, it is the layers or awareness that create shift and movement towards the results that matter most.

What is important for you to note this week as you coach your clients around awareness?

With best wishes,
Jennifer
