Upcoming Group Coaching Training Programs: June/July 2013

Are you a coach looking to add group coaching to your mix? I have three upcoming programs this summer that you may be interested in.

In Person Training - 2 days - June 11 - 12, 2013 in Huntsville, Ontario, CANADA
The Group Coaching Intensive provides attendees with core tips and practice around group coaching.
Incorporating the best of our phone based training (Essentials and Practicum), this is an intensive immersion into group coaching - best practices, core skills and techniques - and provides participants with ample opportunities for practice.

The program is approved for 15 CCEs, and registration includes an 80 page binder, a copy of Effective Group Coaching, plus a group follow-up call after the event. Space is limited to 10 coaches. Early Bird savings on until May 31st. Click here for more detail and to take advantage of the discounted rate.

Training By Phone:
1. Group Coaching Essentials - 6.75 CCEs
Tuesday and Thursday 10-11:15 am Eastern: June 4, 6, 11, 13 and June 25
The Essentials teleseminar provides coaches with more than a dozen tools and templates to support you in designing, marketing your work. We cover the foundations of group coaching, design best practices, marketing tips, and exercises you may want to incorporate into your programs. Although this is a content-rich teleseminar, I do model different approaches and techniques I use in my own group coaching work. The program will be of interest to those coaches who are looking to offer (or are offering) group coaching in-person, by phone, with corporate or public groups. Click here for more information or to register.

2. Advanced Group Coaching Practicum - 8 CCEs
Thursdays 11:30- 12:45 pm ET: June 6, 13, 27, July 18, 25, August 1
The Practicum provides coaches with a supportive environment to practice their gorup coaching skills by phone. Each coach leads part of one of the calls. We also take a deeper dive into the core topics we covered in the Essentials, and also look at topics including engagement, techniques, systems, co-facilitation and exercises/activities. Space is limited to 5 coaches per practicum. Click here for more information or to register.

For many more resources to support you in your work, I hope that you will also visit the Effective Group Coaching Facebook page.

With best wishes,

The Role of Accountability in Group Coaching

Accountability is a key part of the coaching process, whether we are working with individuals, teams or groups. The ongoing nature of the coaching conversation, places an emphasis on goal setting, awareness, action and accountability.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines the core coaching competency of Managing Progress and Accountability as, " Managing Progress and Accountability—Ability to hold attention on what is important for the client, and to leave responsibility with the client to take action." You can view the ICF core competency definitions here.

What techniques can we use to create and support accountability within our groups? Coaches will want to consider the following:

1. What type of field work are you incorporating? What pre and post work will group (or team) members benefit from?
2. What will support the group (collectively and individually) in keeping their goals front and center?
3. How can  coaching requests, challenges and inquiries support the individual group members?
4. What role can peers play (in terms of support for accountability, goal setting etc)?

In a team and group coaching environment it is important to remember that shared accountability is as important as is accountability between coach and client. Do not underestimate the role that peers play in raising the bar and support of accountability.

What tips would you share about accountabiltity and coaching?

Have a great week,
Jennifer

Core Coaching Competency - Goal Setting

Goal setting, along with the focus on accountability, awareness, and action are all defining features of any
coaching model. How are you working with goals with your clients?

Most of us are familiar with the SMART goal framework:
S - Specific
M - Measurable - this may involve percentages, numbers or other measures so we can see how progress is being made
A - Achievable - is this goal achievable with stretch?
R - Realistic
T - timebound - what are the specific timeframes in which the goals will take place

In working with goals it is always useful to consider the overall time orientation - what are the key goals in the short term, medium term and long term?

John Whitmore poses a couple of other goal frameworks in his book - Coaching for Performance - including PURE (positively stated, understood, relevant and eithical) and CLEAR (Challenging , Legal, Environemntally Sound, Appropriate, Recorded) (Whitore, Coaching For Performance, 2003, pp 61).

This week as you move through your coaching conversations notice how you are working with goals with your clients. What approaches are supporting them most? Which time orientation are you looking at?

Have a terrific week.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

My Interview with Marielle Gauthier - the Power of Coaching

I was able to sit down virtually this spring with Marielle Gauthier, a coach in Saskatchewan, to speak about coaching. She interviewed me as part of a series of interviews with coaches of all different backgrounds. We had a very lively discussion.

In the interview we talked about:

  • the difference between coaching, consulting and training
  • how coaching is a different type of conversation
  • how coaching is an opportunity to pause and reflect
  • the coachee as the driver of the process
  • how coaching can support culture change and organizational change
  • how a coaching conversation can attain better results
  • the impact of coaching on individuals, teams and organizations
  • how coaching can help individuals and teams get more focus and results
  • return on investment as a result of the coaching process

You can listen to the interview here. It runs for about 30 minutes. I hope that you will enjoy it! You will also want to stay tuned for other interviews Marielle is doing.

With best wishes,
Jennifer
