 This month we're celebrating our 18th anniversary here at Potentials Realized. One of our flagship programs, Group Coaching Essentials, has supported thousands of coaches in designing, marketing and implementing their own group coaching programming. Setting Intentions - Group and Team Coaching - Week 1 of the 52 weeks series

 

Happy New Year! I am looking forward to bringing to you 52 blog posts this year on group and team coaching issues on a weekly basis.  They will be geared to provide you with implementable ideas and resources you can incorporate right away into any conversation you have with many, whether it’s group or team coaching.

Given that this first week of the year is a significant one for kick offs of new groups and team conversations, I thought it would be fitting to focus on the topic of working with your groups or teams to set intentions for the year.

Supporting our clients in intention setting is valuable for a variety of reasons including:

·       IT provides a focus or direction of where clients want to go

·       It supports a focus on mindset, not just action

·       It opens up the conversation to what’s possible! (and we know from research that helping our clients step into the realm of exploring “What’s possible, is at the heart of the coaching conversation).

So what can be do to support intention setting for the year?

Here are five different ways to work with intention setting, whether it’s at the start of the year, or start of a program:

·       Simply ask “What are your intentions for the year?

·       Use a card deck and have individuals select a card, or a photo representing their intentions for the year

·       Have people select a metaphor which represents their intentions for the year

·       Roll the Dice  - Whether you joined me for the 18^th Annual Year End Group and Teams Program Call OR for one of our recent Remote Pathways calls, I’ve been enjoying sharing the Reconnecting Workspaces dice this winter. They will be ready for purchase soon.

·       DRAW It Out – Last year I became a Draw Your Future Certified Facilitator, and enjoy bringing this graphic facilitation process to my clients.

Reconnecting and Supporting Groups in the Return to the Office

This fall marks the return to the office in many places around the world. Whether individuals are moving back into the office, or moving to a hybrid workspace, or remaining distributed, it's an opportunity to reconnecting individuals, teams and groups. 

Over the last year I've spent a lot of time talking with teams, HR groups, coaches about the 7 Remote Enablers (TM), seven areas which help us soar in the remote space. When moving to this next phase of work, whatever it will look like, it's important that we provide a space for people to reconnect. 

This blog post focuses on four things you can do as a coach to reconnect and support groups in the return to the office. 

#1 - Provide space for connection. Leaving time and space for people to connect is at the foundation of a smooth return to the office. What formal and informal opportunities can be built in, to reconnect people?

#2 - Provide ample time for (re-) introductions - in many workplaces, and workspaces today people may not have seen each other for almost two years in person. There are likely to be several people who have never been physically in the building or having met their team mates, especially if they were hired after the pandemic started. As coaches in what ways can you provide a space for introductions.

#3 - Explore vision - Vision has been an important anchor for so many throughout the last few years. As I shared recently at the ICF Converge conference, revisiting and rearticulating vision is a key part of success in the remote and hybrid space. What are you doing to explore vision with the groups and teams you are working with?

Consider how you might:

• Create Vision Boards on an individual basis
• Create Roadmaps on an individual, group or team basis
• Create Team Quilts
• Bring in a graphic facilitator (like myself) to do a Draw Your Future process to map it out!

#4 - Revisit strengths - The ability to leverage strengths is a key part of success and in today's variable workspace this is no different. What opportunities can you create to introduce StrengthsFinder/Clifton Strengths or VIA Strengths to clients. Stimulating these conversations are important for individual contributors in a group setting, or for entire teams can be a valuable place to begin.

Then weekly Tuesday sessions until the last week of September (Tuesdays 1230 - 230pm ET).

The facilitator program will include:

• 22 hours of live virtual training
•  An introduction and overview of each chapter via microlearning
•  A deep dive into the ins and outs of the resource
• A Coaching Guide for Navigating Reconnecting Worksapces which includes an additional 80 pages of information on how to lead clients through the resources, and additional exercises to support extended conversations.
