Expanding Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit - Inner Critic - 21

Work around the Inner Critic, The Saboteur, or Gremlin is at the core of many coaching processes
and models. As we move through a process of change it’s useful to remember that the Inner Critic surfaces, making it known that change is afoot.

The Inner Critic can take many forms, and is an internal voice the coaching client will hear when change is happening. From saying “you are not good enough” to “who will care”, the inner critic is often grounded in our core identity, values and belief systems. The voice of the inner critic will point to different perspectives, as well as assumptions at play.

At different stages of the coaching process, it will be important to identify when the Inner Critic is showing up and to determine how you want to address it. Unchecked, the Inner Critic can derail the best plans, getting in the way of action and progress. It can be a signal that there is deeper work to be undertaken around mindsets, beliefs and assumptions.

In a group coaching context, it is likely that the inner critic is getting activated at different times as group members hit different stages in the coaching process. Our approach to working with the inner critic may also be variable. Some clients may want to take a playful, exploratory approach with the Inner Critic, by giving it a shape, or a voice. Others may want to box the inner critic, while others may want to banish them. Given that the inner critic is part of ourselves, and may be a signal of protection, it’s important to gain more experience and tools in this area.

While an entire team may have limiting beliefs, there may not be one voice of the inner critic which exists in a team context. As such, inner critic work may be more pervasive in the team context than the group context.

Questions to consider :
1.       What inner critics are surfacing as you move through change?
2.       What do they look like? Give them a voice, a dress, notice their manners…
3.       What changes are the inner critic signalling?
4.       As you move through change, what is the inner critic wanting to hold onto?
5.       What would be a more empowering belief for you?
6.       What’s another way of approaching change?

Enjoy the exploration,

Building Your Group and Team Coaching Toolkit - Strategic Issues (20)

Many teams and group members will want to build in a focus around strategic issues into their
coaching process. Strategic issues are important as they usually take us to the 30,000 foot view, or macro view of our work, context and landscape.

While strategic years ago meant 10 – 20 years, in today’s super-charged world of work, strategic now may mean 3-5 years down the road.

There are a variety of excellent strategic planning tools we may incorporate into our work as coaches, as we help individual group members and teams identify what is important to them.

Three tools you may want to explore are the:
SWOT – one of the more traditional strategic planning tools which explore strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
PESTE – an environmental scan which explores the political, economic, social, technological and environmental layers
Strategic Issues Mapping

I often will incorporate one or more of these into a team coaching conversation, or as pre-work for a group coaching conversation. The insights gleaned around our context (the SWOT and PESTE), or what we see in our landscape (Strategic Issues Mapping) can be a great spark for a conversation.

For a description of what Strategic Issues Mapping is all about, take a look at my 2014 Teams365 blog post here: https://www.potentialsrealized.com/teams-365-blog/teams-365-85-strategic-planning-tool-2-strategic-issues-mapping

As previously mentioned, I will often have teams or group members create their own SWOT prior to a coaching conversation. You could also get group members to work in breakouts (Virtual or in-person) to explore one or more of the SWOT categories, presenting it back and then sparking a deeper conversation with the team.

Six questions you might explore as you coach around strategic issues:
1.       What are the strengths and weaknesses?
2.       Looking to our external environment, what threats and opportunities exist?
3.       As we move to the 30,000 view, what’s important to notice?
4.       Keeping in mind our strategic priorities, what do we need to say YES to? What do we need to say NO to?
5.       3-5 years from now, how will we know we have been successful? (Ask this on an individual level if group coaching, or team level if team coaching)
6.       If _____ ($/resources/ etc) were not a priority, what would we do?

Enjoy your conversations,
Jennifer

As we step into the last quarter of the year, what are your learning goals? A reminder that this
month several of our most popular ICF CCE approved programs are starting again. Here's what's on tap this month:

PlanDoTrack Facilitator Training (24 CCEs):  Do you work with virtual teams, leaders or virtual entrepreneurs? Looking to add a set of programming tools, and templates around productivity and teamwork to your mix? Consider becoming a PlanDoTrack Facilitator.

A second (and possibly third) cohort will start in late November, running into early December. Choose from Mondays and Tuesday evenings from 6-9 pm ET (starting November 25 for 3 weeks) or a more intensive weekend program.  Learn more about the program here.
