State of the Union 3.0 with Team and Group Coaching

In December an article I had written for choice magazine was featured in their latest quarterly publication - Team and Group Coaching in an Evolving World. This article, "State of the Union 3.0 -

Team and Group Coaching" was the third time I had written a feature article for choice in the last 5 or 6 years.

Download the article here.

In the article, I covered six core influences on team and group coaching at this moment in time (late 2022 and early 2023), including:

1. Paradigm Shifts

2. Systems Approaches

3. The need for belonging

4. Trust, safety and connection

5. Teaming

6. Adaptive and emerging models

Several of these I explore further in my latest writing - Reconnecting Workspaces, especially chapters 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and the 21 chapter myths and paradigms.

I shared more about these six influences on team and group coaching in our December 2022 19th annual Year End Holiday party.

Tune in here and check out the first 30 minutes of the call:

I then enjoyed sitting down with Garry Schlieffer to talk further about this on his Beyond the Page Podcast. The episode should be coming out soon and I will share it when it is ready.

What are you seeing as some of the new influences on your work as a group and team coach?

Certainly the new ACTC from ICF - Advanced Credential in Team Coaching - will jettison us forward within this part of our profession.  If you haven't caught the recent calls I've hosted on the ACTC and how we are supporting coaches through our new Team Coaching Certificates, check out my December call on the new ACTC:

What are you doing to learn more and scale more conversations with teams and groups? Curious about what it can look like for you? Set up a call.

Enjoy!

Jennifer

Six Exercises to Consider for 2019 - Group and Team Coaching

Last month, I hosted my 15th annual year-end group and teams program call. I've broken that 35 view it here.
minute call down into three pieces. If you missed part 1 which I shared last month on 2018 trends in group and team programs,

You can read part 1 of the post here.

Today I wanted to jump forward into six exercises you might want to consider incorporating into your upcoming group and team programs - View the 11 minute video here.

In this 11 minute video I share some of my most widely tools and processes during 2018 and contrast them with what I used in 2017.

As coaches, facilitators and trainers, our toolkit is essential. What are the tools and processes you regularly lean into, in service of your clients?

What are the approaches you want to be leveraging more this year?

With best wishes,
Jennifer

2018 Trends in Group and Team Programs - Coaching, Webinars and On-Demand

Late last week, I hosted the 15th annual year-end group and team programs call. This has become an
15th Annual Year End Group Programs Call with Jennifer Britton
annual event where I take a look back at  some of the trends from the past year as it relates to group and team programming. I also take a look ahead at what themes might be prevalent, and influencing, our work.

You can check out what I wrote about last year's call here.

This year, it was no surprise that some of these themes showed up as key areas:
- Micro-learning (short sound-bytes of learning - usually only 3-10 minutes in length). With that in mind, I'll be releasing components of the call in shorter soundbytes in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!
- Considering what on-demand offerings you might include - as someone who has offered on-demand programs since 2014 it's interesting to see the current wave of professionals flocking to create on-demand opportunities. As a coach, I think it is important to consider how on-demand may supplement your different live offerings as well.
- Enhanced Virtual Focus - I've seen more and more professionals shift to the virtual space this year, and become not only more proficient, but confident in leading ENGAGING virtual events. This year was the 5th year of offering our series of virtual train-the-trainer programs. The Virtual Facilitation Essentials was approved this year for ICF CCEs, making it a popular offering. It will be starting up again in the new year if 2019 will be your year for expanding your virtual toolkit and skills!

There were a few more trends impacting us this year, and you are probably not surprised that these themes showed up on my list

The second part of the 15th Annual Year End call took a look ahead to 2019, and themes I think will continue to influence our work. As a writer I'm constantly scanning the horizon for latest research and focus. Having been in the industry of coaching for more than 15 years now it has been very interesting to see how many themes continue to cycle.

What are the trends you see influencing your work?

During the call I also shared my top 6 tools I turned to, time and time again. My work has continued to focus in the virtual space this year, as it will in 2019. As technologies continue to morph and emerge it makes geographically diverse groups a popular choice for busy professionals. I'll cover off my top 6 resources as a separate post in the coming weeks, but I will say that visual cards are on the list once again! Also up there was. of course, journaling. If you haven't connected into my Weekly Journaling Prompts, which I share every Saturday over at the Teams365 blog, do be sure to check it out. Of course, planning and journaling have been a key theme for me this year, as I released the Coaching Business Builder Workbook and Planner in August and the PlanDoTrack Workbook and Planner for Virtual and Remote Professionals late last week.

What are you planning to create in your business next year? If you haven't found it yet, be sure to check out my new website - CoachingBusinessBuilder.com, including the weekly blog posts I share around Coaching Business Development.

I'm looking forward to being in touch with one more blog post of 2018. Enjoy your holidays next week!

Best wishes,
Jennifer

Visuals in Group and Team Coaching Work

Earlier this week I dedicated my bi-weekly Facebook live call to working with visuals in group and team coaching. While I've been using different card decks and visuals for more than a decade now, I continue to rely on them as a "go-to" for conversations of all types. If you're still over on Facebook, please check out the 4.23.18 13 minute bi-weekly call I did sharing a recent experience of working with goals, visuals and questions.

Given that not everyone is on Facebook (and yes - that may be you), I thought it would be useful to dedicate part of this post here at the blog to a quick walk through of a potential activity you might consider.

We stepped into quarter 2 a few weeks ago and many of our clients are working towards this, or other important goals. Here's a quick 20 minute activity which can help individuals gain some new perspectives around goals.

First, have each team member think about one of their most important goals. With a partner, zoom into that, discussing what it would look like if that goal is SMART - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timebound. I always an an E on the end and if you've read any of my books you'll see me call them SMART-E goals. E is for exciting. Be sure to check out why the goal is exciting and what's important about it. Have them write this out and notice what becomes clear for them around the goal.

Next, get partners to select a random question card (there are 22 in the Conversation Sparker Deck) and then connect that question to their goal. Perhaps the question is "What do you need to do to collaborate more?" or "What do you say no to?"or "What else?". The role of the partner is simply to listen to what the other person says.

Finally, you can have group members in a third round of this discussion select another  photo which represents what they want to create in their goal achievement.

Visuals have a way of accessing new knowledge and ideas in a way questions alone may not. Check out the Conversation Sparker Cards at ConversationSparker.com.

I've rolled in more than 40 facilitated instructions into an e-manual called 40 Ways to Work with Visual Cards, which is available through our site and also Coaching Toys. If you are looking for actual instructions and five worksheets you can use and duplicate for your groups, check it out at our Potentials Realized Store.

With best wishes,
Jennifer

12 days of holidays - Day 1 Group and Team Program Goodies

As we start to wind down the business year of 2016 in lead up to the holidays, I wanted to resuscitate an older tradition I've undertaken over the last decade a couple of times - the 12 days of holidays series. Each day up to December 23rd I'll be posting a link to a different resource or special I think you might be able to benefit from when pulling together your own group and team programs - workshops, retreats, group and team coaching, webinars etc. I hope that you will also share these with your friends and colleagues!

Today is day 1 of 12 and I'm including a link to the 13th Annual Year End Group and Team Programs call I held on Friday December 9th. In this year's call I took a look back at some of the key themes and trends in group and team programing this past year, and looked ahead to three possibilities which will likely impact our work with groups and teams during 2017. You can view this video online at our EffectiveGroupCoach YouTube Channel, or view  it here. Run time is 45 minutes:

Enjoy! I'm excited about the resources and specials I will be sharing before December 23rd and I hope that you will enjoy them too. Stay tuned for tomorrow's goodie. It is related to the #1 question I received about groups this year.

Best wishes,
Jennifer

Building your group and team coaching toolkit

One of the main focus areas of this weekend's Group and Team Coaching Intensive is going to be the
focus on building your toolkit. Building confidence and skills in working with teams and groups. For any of you who have read my work, or joined me for a program, you know how passionate I am as a coach practitioner in this topic area of building our toolkit and innovating as we do it. Each client engagement - whether a team or a group - is different and usually requires a different blend of skills and approaches.

Here are some past posts on this topic of building your toolkit - I hope you'll check them out:

Group Coaching Exercises from 2010 - read it here

Why are exercises important for group programming from 2006 - read it here

Exercises - the backbone of any program from 2009 - read it here

Group Facilitation Tip - Debriefing Exercises  - read it here

You'll hear and see me talk more about exercises and tools in some of last year's Group Coaching Design Studio blabs which I hosted. Here's a 30 min video on Visual Cards- one of my favorite tools. View it here

Here's a really short 3 min video on 5 ways to use index cards - another essential item in your toolkit. View it here.

What are the tools you want to add to your toolbox in the coming months?

We'll be going through more than 2 dozen (24) coaching tools and approaches this weekend at the Group and Team Coaching Intensive (19 CCEs) here in Toronto. I hope that you will consider joining us for this rich weekend program - spots are still open for virtual and in person attendees. Grab your spot here.

Have a great rest of the week,

Effective Group Coaching March Video: Virtual Program Tips

When I first started delivering virtual group programs nine years ago many people queried initially what value they could get by not being face to face. Today with the advent of skype, FaceTime, Google Hangouts, many have embraced virtual programming. With winters like this one which have stymied a lot of travel across North America for the last few months, I am pleased that virtual programming has been my mainstay in the winter months.

This month's Effective Group Coaching Video is on Virtual Program tips which you may find useful if you are running, or thinking of incorporating webinars, teleclasses, virtual retreats or other programs. It's a short four-and-a-half minute video which I hope you will enjoy! You can view it here.

Questions to Consider:
What are your next steps in making virtual programming a reality in your business?
How could it shift your work landscape?
What would your clients enjoy (webinars, teleclasses...)?
What changes do you want to make next winter?

As always, I welcome your feedback and comments - please feel free to do so below.

Have a great week.

With best wishes,
Jennifer

Creating Connection Amongst Group Members: Group Coaching

One of the eleven core competencies (of the ICF) is about Building Trust and Rapport with our
Five Ways to Build Connection - Copyright 2014, Jennifer Britton
coaching clients. In a group and team coaching context creating connection amongst group members is just as important in creating a "safe" space for a coaching conversation. Without the sense of safety it is unlikely that people will engage into the depth of a coaching conversation. It may be more of a "surface" conversation.

Today's blog post explores five ways to create connetion amongst group members. As we know, the coaching process may begin before you even get in the room, or on the phone together. Many of thes tips are also useful in creating a link between you and each particpant.

#1 - Introductions: Consider how you can make introductions a key part of creating connection. Whether you are in person or on the phone/web, consider how you can use introductions to make people feel more connected. Is there any follow-up (i.e. photos and a paragraph about themselves) you would like people to share after the first session?

#2 - Utilize breakouts: Breakouts make a huge difference in getting people to connect in a larger group setting (even when the group may only be 4-8 people). Historically, it was only conference calling services such as Maestro Conferencing that allowed you to do breakouts on the phone. today free services such as FreeConferencing.com allow you to break into up to four separate groups. How might you leverage breakouts for connection?

#3 - Bring in different approaches, for example, Visuals. I continue to get amazed at the impact of using Visual tools such as Visual explorer in my work. Seveal weeks ago, while I was delivering a conference presentation I brought in Visual Explorer as a conversation sparker around collaboration. The change of energy in the room was instantanenous, which says a lot for 3:30pm! using visual resources may allow certain participants to connect to the conversation in a different way.

Click here to view my December video post on different visual tools I use in my work.

#4 - Leave enough time - Creating connection takes time. A best practice in any group coaching work is "Less is more". What might you need to let go of in terms of topics, activities, in order to provide the space for people to be in dialogue?

# 5 - Peer learning partners/buddies - Creating peer partners (twos or threes) can also provide a significant way to keep the conversation flowing and boost connection between some group members. If you are concerned that these connections may create cliques, rotate the pairings. Fro my experience, I have found that people have enjoyed building connection with one or two other peers in the group, and that it has allowed them to go deeper in their own goals and plans. Also, it's always interesting to notice what connections people find, even it pairings are done randomly!

What approaches do you want to bring into your next group coaching process?

Best wishes,
Jennifer

New Video Post - Visual Tools

I've just posted a new Video today on three visual tools I love using with teams and groups that I am working with. Whether it's a retreat, a group coaching session, or a strategic planning session, I continue to see the positive impact these three resources have in stimulating dialogue and conversation.

In this 2 minute 40 second video I speak briefly on:
Visual Explorer from Center for Creative Leadership. More info from their site here.
The JICT Images Deck available at CoachingToys.com. More info from their site here.
The Coaching Game - Points of View. More info from their site here.

I hope that you will check these out and consider how you might use one, or all three, during your 2014 engagements with teams and groups.
